The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show #121

The 121st episode of The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show, recorded at Crow Versus Crow Haus using a Zoom H1 recorder as a microphone and stitched together using outdated software. Please listen to this on headphones.

This one kicks off with live death from Suicide, recorded at CBGB's in '77; flicks through kitchen sink skronk from Leeds' newest no-no-wavers, Dwindling; spits ash and creamy plume through a Woven Skull; blows out some SRS melancholy free-jazz EXPLSNS from Black Unity Trio; rattles loud from the Gloom-y belly; Embla Quickbeam draws bird song and flame flicker into her swirling meditative scrapings; before Sophie Cooper and Julian Bradley transmit intermittent frequencies through brok... LAWD! There's just too much ear gold! Go! Dig! You Heps, you!

'Ra Wept' - Cut-Poems and Collages by Crow Versus Crow

Ra Wept by Crow Versus Crow

Collages and cut-poems by Crow Versus Crow October 2016 - October 2017
available via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp

A5 32pp full colour mini book of collages and cut poems by Crow Versus Crow, printed on 140gsm silk paper with 300gsm recycled card cover. Limited edition of 50 hand-numbered copies.

'Ra Wept' is a collection of thirteen sets of mixed-media digital collages and cut-poems, formed from words sourced from newspapers collected during daily commutes, produced over a year between October 2016 and October 2017.

Structured around a single seasonal year, this body of work documents a period of very personal exploration, incorporating a dizzying constellation of references to eclectic, and often esoteric, subject matter - from Egyptian and Biblical Creation narratives to Free Jazz; Alchemy to Nico; Existentialism to William Burroughs - forming a dense, cyclical, looping narrative, that draws equally on sound poetry and lyrical Romanticism. Thirteen ruminations on Being, fleeting and relative. No end.

The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show #119

The 119th episode of The Crow Versus Crow Radio Show, recorded at Crow Versus Crow Haus using a Zoom H1 recorder as a microphone and stitched together using outdated software. Please listen to this on headphones.

#119 picks from the previous episode's exploration of Paul Bowles' 'Music of Morocco' box-set before winding itself around the spools of a selection of recent tape-orientated cassette releases from the Falt label; sinks into a heady mire of grimy ecstasies, from Blood Stereo to Klein, via Scottish work songs and golden choral loopings; before Grey Guides hold up a gunked mirror to post-Brexit, undustrial Britain with an exclusive (killer!) mix of sounds from the scraggy edges of post-punk, industrial and weirdo noise.

New Release: Sophie Cooper - The Curfew Tower Recordings (CVC007 / cassette & digital download)

Sophie Cooper
The Curfew Tower Recordings
(CVC007)
Limited Edition of 50 cassettes and digital download

Sophie Cooper’s The Curfew Tower Recordings consists of two collages produced from recordings of various musical pieces, actions and field recordings taken during the artists weeklong IMPOSE||LIFT residency, part of The Penthouse’s 18 month curatorial programme (http://thepenthousenq.com/), at Bill Drummond’s, The Curfew Tower, Northern Ireland. The work presented here documents Cooper’s questioning of the potential for dialogue between trombone and voice within the song-writing process. These sketches document an intuitive exploration through improvisation.

Cooper’s tribute to La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s Oceans is a wholly apt reference point in relation to The Curfew Tower Recordings, as the influence of Minimalist pioneers, along with the early electronic experiments of Daphne Oram, for example, can be heard through the undulating, shimmering abstractions that blur the lines between Cooper’s layers of effected trombone and vocals.

Interspersed through these explorations are recordings of Cooper’s Dial-a-Bone project - personalised trombone improvisations, performed in response to random callers’ requests… from within a public phone box.

Sophie Cooper is a musician living in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, experimenting with the conventions of song writing through guitar, the trombone and vocals. Cooper, in addition to solo work, is a member of The Slowest Lift, with Julian Bradley of Vibracathedral Orchestra, and often records and performs improvised works with French pianist Delphine Dora. Her previous records have been made available through the Was Ist Das?, Rural Colours, Wild Silence and Front & Follow labels, amongst numerous others.

Alocasia Garden
Colony
Crow Versus Crow
(CVC005)
Limited Edition of 50 cassettes & digital download

Order now via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp

Crow Versus Crow is incredibly proud to present Colony, the latest release from Alocasia Garden, alias of Folkstone (UK) -based experimental artist Reece Thomas Green.

Startlingly prolific, Colony is Alocasia Garden’s 20th full-length release since the project’s inception in 2014 - following previous cassettes on such esteemed labels as Sacred Tapes, Vanity Pill and Strange Rules.

Written and recorded in June 2016, using contact mics, ride symbol, synth and two 4-track tape recorders, Colony expands upon an established, highly personal aesthetic, specifically exploring more confrontational, harsher textures in stark contrast to experimentations with more open, spacious elements within the delicately layered compositions.

Rooted in the historical lineage of Industrial Noise music, yet eschewing any associated machismo and posturing, with Alocasia Garden, Reece Thomas Green manages to deftly imbue his textured, almost tactile, compositions with a sense of poignancy – a highly emotive, intrinsically human expression extracted from the most inhuman of sources. Piercing screeches and anthropomorphic feedback snarls give way to sustained tones, echoing fizzes and flowing mechanical gurgles, coagulating to evoke dystopian landscapes; battered, collapsed but not hopeless.

Colony is released as a limited edition of 50 professionally dubbed white-shelled cassettes, with full colour labels, wrapped in a full colour extended j-card, housed in a clear plastic case, and digital download.

NEW DISTRO ITEM: Phong Tran - A.I.R. Tapes 1 (Excavation Series 5) cassette on Power Moves Library

NEW DISTRO ITEM: Phong Tran - A.I.R. Tapes 1 (Excavation Series 5) cassette on Power Moves Library

Available now via the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp

With the creation of a new arm of the Crow Versus Crow project, I am very pleased to announce the first Distro title available through the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp - Phong Tran's A.I.R Tapes 1 cassette, part of the on-going Excavation Series on the excellent Toronto-based label, Power Moves Library.

As a solution to increasing international postage charges, Power Moves Library and Crow Versus Crow will now stock a limited few of the bulk of each other's releases, making the records available to USA/Canada through PML and the UK/Europe through Crow Versus Crow at a much more reasonable price to interested listeners. We both feel that it is vital to help other artists and labels spread the word of their work and hope that this distribution project will go some way to doing so.

So, with that, here is the first Power Moves Library title available through Crow Versus Crow. Phong Tran's A.I.R. Tapes 1 is a mixtape created from recordings taken directly from Indian radio during his travels through the country during 1996-97.

'There are hours and hours of these tapes made from various locations with varying reception levels. I was constantly listening to the little Sony shortwave radio that I had with me. I memorised the timings of certain favourite programmes so I could record them. Otherwise, I always had the machine ready at hand in case something of interest came on. I picked tracks for this mixtape based on performance, duration, rarity and audio quality.'

The result is a beautiful collection of hiss-filled ragas, traditional compositions, interview snippets and English language news broadcasts that amount to a fascinating insight into one person's interactions and experiences of a country, it's socio-political conditions and musical, cultural history, at a particular time.

It's an incredibly strong record that comes very highly recommended.

Having been referred to people keen to pick up a copy by Power Moves Library, I now have just 5 copies of the tape available through the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp. The tapes are £5 to the UK / £6.50 to Europe, including postage and packaging. I have agreed to only sell to the UK/Europe as both Power Moves Library and Phong Tran can easily, and cost-effectively, cover the rest of the world. But, as both Phong Tran and PML have now sold out of the tapes, if you are beyond the UK/Europe and would like a copy please send me an email and I will try and arrange a copy for you.

Thanks for all of your support with Crow Versus Crow. Now, DIG! You hep cats, you!

NEW RELEASE: BBBlood, Posset & Stuart Chalmers - 'delirium cutlet impaste' (Crow Versus Crow Editions)

BBBlood, Posset & Stuart Chalmers
delirium cutlet impaste
Limited edition of 50 CD-Rs and download
Available from the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp Friday 14th April 2017

Whether wielding Dictaphone, mobile phone or zither, Posset, BBBlood and Stuart Chalmers, three pillars of the No-Audience Underground, have honed their respective craft over a number of years and an even larger number of innovative and pioneering recordings, released through such esteemed DIY labels as Chocolate Monk, Strange Rules, Singing Knives, Beartown Records, KIKS/Girlfriend, Invisible City, Was Ist Das?... The list goes on!

So, it is an absolute pleasure for Crow Versus Crow to be able to present, Delirium Cutlet Impaste; a three-track three-way split, with BBBlood, Posset and Stuart Chalmers each offering their own slab of rich, evocative, alchemical tape music.

Delirium Cutlet Impaste is a record made from within the socio-political mindfuck that is the UK in 2017.

…The prevalence of so-called ‘alt-right’ (read: fascist) politics; deepening social divisions; an increasingly retrospective, nostalgia-yearning for an England that couldn’t, shouldn’t and, almost certainly, never did exist; a building of cultural walls to the exclusion of various/any cultural others…

This is the climate within which this record has been made.

Yet, this record isn’t a reactionary, condensable to a soundbite, statement piece. It is an open, complex maelstrom of layers of sounds and ideas

…domesticity; poetics in the minutiae of the mundane; field recordings of European excursion; the sounds of various non-Western musics, processed and subsumed; the body as instrument, as conduit…

This record reflects an open-armed engagement with a shifting, tumultuous, uncertain contemporary world. It is a raw, joyful expression of the creative process in, and in spite of, the environment from which it is born.

Delirium Cutlet Impaste will be available from Friday 14th April 2017 as a limited edition of 50 CD-Rs, housed in a full-colour 300gsm ‘greeting card’ sleeve, featuring a collaborative collage produced by BBBlood, Posset, Stuart Chalmers and Crow Versus Crow, in a hand-stamped, numbered and sticker-sealed envelope, and download from the Crow Versus Crow Bandcamp.
